approved by the Department.
Subsequently, parents/guardians were circularised and were requested to vote.
The returns were as follows: -
Orissa (232); Orientwini (28); Citrus (31);Riversands (19);Citrusville (14)
What does Orissa mean:
Firstly, Orissa is a coined word:
"OR" from Orient Hill
"IS" from Isipingo
"SA" from South Africa
This encompasses the Geographical location of the school.
Secondly, a tie with our mother country - Orissa is a state in India bounded by the Bay of Bengal on the South East -
very similar to the position of our school with regard to its proximity to the Umbogintwini River and the Indian
Ocean on the South East.
Thirdly, the educational progress made in the state of Orissa has been phenomenal. In 1970 there were 4
universities, 73 colleges for general education, 5200 secondary schools 26208 primary schools, all with a total
student population of 2382 000. Orissa Primary is constantly aware of these strides made in educational provision
and always strives to cater for all who may seek admission at our school.
It is with this information in mind that the school motto - "Learn to Serve" was introduced.
Every endeavour is made to instil in our pupils the importance of and the need to serve his/her fellow beings in all
sincerity.
On 14 August 1984 the school was officially named "Orissa Primary School". Sketches. dances and songs were
organised to mark this historic function. Sweets, as in the traditional custom, were served to the pupils.
